5 indie bands you need to listen

When people usually exercise during their hard times, or sing a Britney Spears music when they're hype, I listen to indies. No matter how much I love singing to One Direction songs and dancing to Kygo's tropical beats, my heart and taste of music will always lead themselves to indie music.

Which is why I believe this is a perfect opportunity to share some of my favorite indie musicians and their music, and finally tell the people of earth that indie music aren't always listened by quirky, tribal loving, hippies. It turns out I got a lot of inspiration from indie music, and also learned a lot of things from listening to it. 

And I don't even care when my friends listen to Justin's Purpose album while I was listening to Vance Joy's great summer, I am proud to say that I am an indiego. Therefore . . .

1. HAIM

 

HAIM is the prefect indie band that captures indie music in a fun and modern way. This trio has one of the most unique voice and style, who always dress as if they are going to Coachella everyday. HAIM is one of the old soul young talents who is eclectic, funky, and definitely keeps your ears deeply amused.

Falling, is one of my favorite song of HAIM, discovering it in one of John Green's most anticipated movies, Paper Towns.


2. Foster the People

I didn't know about Foster the People until a friend of mine gave me Foster the People Supermodel album, that until now I have never taken it out of my car's CD player. Foster the People does have a hint pop and rock in it, but once you listen to the lyrics and how the melody was played, it's indie all over.  

What I love most is Mark Foster's amazing skill of song-writing. "I've been bitten by animal that's pretending to be my friend"? Not only it's catchy as a lyric but Foster the People's songs have deep feelings and meanings, meanings that I even dare to testify that it is indeed better than what Taylor Swift would write about her sex life and ex-boyfriend.


 3. Vance Joy

Technically, Vance Joy isn't a band. It instead is a stage name made by Australian singer-songwriter, James Gabriel Keogh. But though he is solo, that doesn't cover how massive his talent is for songwriting and singing. He has the voice that you'd expect in an indie genre, subtle, unique, and heart-warming. Add it with a teaspoon of ukulele and a cup of old-school vocabularies, and you'll get a cake of a great indie music.

My favorite Vance Joy songs are Great Summer and the very famous Riptide. Riptide's music video definitely contains the whole indie feel that'll give you chills after you watched it.


4. Years and Years

Years and Years may not be categorized as an indie based music band, but after listening to it over and over again, I believe it has a hint of it. Their music does have some electronic element that might be odd hearing it for some people. But overall Years and Years music is basically fun, groovy, and definitely makes your limbs dance on the beat by itself.

 

You may know Years & Years lead singer, Olly Alexander, in Emily Browning's God Help the Girl. A film that has so many indie music at its finest, including "I Just Want Your Jeans".


5. Bastille

The name Bastille definitely feels familiar to you, of course. Unless you are buried under the sea for two years and haven't open the billboard music charts ever since. Bastille has a little bit of rock, but it's definitely included in the indie genre last I heard. Not only do Bastille has an incredibly handsome lead singer, Dan Smith, Bastille songs are magnifying, vulnerable and took us to the world the songs want us to be in. Rare to bands that are classifying themselves as rock bands. 

When I listen to their songs, I cry. And when I listen to their songs again, I may could jump up on the couch following the beat. Bastille is one unique band you cannot miss.



Those are my favorite indie bands, so far. I was thinking of putting Fall Out Boy, but everybody knows that Fall Out Boy is a goddamn rock band. So what's yours?
